Tyler Webb
Spanish OPI Exam
Tyler Webb's journey to Spanish fluency began in middle school and continued through four years of high school. However, he believes his true growth in the language started during his mission in Ecuador. This immersion experience was further enhanced by a study abroad semester in Spain, where he lived in a Spanish-speaking environment.
During his mission, Tyler had the opportunity to serve alongside several native Spanish-speaking companions. Their correction and support played a key role in refining his language skills. His time in Spain also deepened his connection to the language, as he was encouraged to speak Spanish constantly, even outside of structured settings. This exposure helped Tyler advance his Spanish proficiency significantly.
Throughout his language-learning journey, Tyler benefited from the support of dedicated professors at BYU and friends from around the world who speak Spanish. His motivation to maintain and improve his Spanish is fueled by the many opportunities he has to use the language both locally and online. With Spanish all around him, Tyler finds it easy to practice and further his skills. He emphasizes that he never wants to lose the ability to speak Spanish.
With a solid foundation in the language, Tyler felt less apprehensive about making mistakes when he arrived in Spanish-speaking countries. He recognized that errors are part of the learning process, and he grew comfortable with making them, particularly in Ecuador, where English was less commonly spoken. This necessity to communicate in Spanish was pivotal to his development, ultimately allowing him to express almost anything he wanted to say.
Tyler credits consistent study as one of his key strategies for language learning. He found an advanced speaking class taught by Professor Deaton especially beneficial, particularly in discussing complex topics like politics. However, Tyler believes that living abroad is crucial for mastering the language. To expand his vocabulary, he took a proactive approach by writing down unfamiliar words and researching them later, driven by his desire to fully understand his surroundings.
When preparing for the OPI, Tyler relied on the years of practice and learning he had accumulated. His background gave him the confidence and skills needed to succeed. His advice for OPI preparation is simple: breathe and trust your previous learning. He encourages others to avoid overthinking, reminding them that the OPI is just another conversation. His key advice is to act naturally and respond to questions to the best of their ability.
Looking back on his language-learning success, Tyler identifies curiosity as the driving force behind his progress. His genuine desire to understand more and communicate with those around him kept him motivated. He also stresses the importance of determination, hope, patience, and the acceptance of mistakes—qualities that every language learner should embrace.
